Weekend Update: July 17, 2011

Highs:

A movie night and an 8 mile run at 6 in the morning. Sesse Island is beautiful. Got to see some friends that I don't see enough of. Hanging out on the beach reading and relaxing.

Lows:

Malaria training was a ridiculous waste of time and money. $14,000 USD spent that will not help to fight malaria at all. On the plus side I stayed in a resort hotel for a week and ate pizza and veal.

What I Did:

Sat through malaria training. Developed a plan to incorporate some malaria fighting activities into the routine at our vocational school.

Also attended a VAC meeting. Bridge Committee I launched is going well.

What Is On The Agenda:

Meeting with my org Tuesday in order to prepare the first monthly report our school will submit to our parent organization. Also ready to start measuring the daily quantity of cow, pig, and goat dung produced at our site.

Sanity Meter:

Improving, although its been pretty easy when I'm around friends and am staying at resort hotels. I'm still not in a great place, but at least right now I've got distractions. Not sleeping well. Am becoming more and more of the opinion that my being here does more to hurt Africa than help it. This week was fun, but I'm not here to have fun. I have trouble explaining to people why I'm staying. I honestly don't know that I understand why.

What I'm Reading:

Can't get through Last of the Mohicans. It will probably sit on my shelf and fall in 50 page increments over the course of 6 months. Moving on to 'The Devil in the White City' by Erik Larson.

Favorite Quote of Malaria Training:

"you read the James Bond books? it's a catch-22"
-Dr. Myers
